The Jokers

Every youngster filled with anger, energy, enthusiasm, and sadness can relate to these intimate photos. This is a study of the age of adolescence in NYC in the 1950s by Bruce Davidson. These kids are anxiously moving forward with an unknown future and unknown goals. Not only is Davidson’s work a sincere portrayal of troubled teenagers coming of age, but it also acts as a documentation of teenage life during the 50s, exposing the emotional climate of that time period and exposing the dark side of a supposedly innocent time period.

Sometimes you have to spice up the work day

Sometimes you have to spice up the work day

Sorry, I know it has been a while since I have put anything up, but that’s what happens when you work in politics and mid-biennium budget fun rolls around.

One of my prized possessions is a 1971 Rolex Oyster Precision. It is a watch that I wear day in and day out. I love to throw it on with a pair of jeans and a T or with my suit at work and being a swiss made watch you know it is bullet proof. I mean come on the watch has been running for forty plus years and I don’t see it stoping soon.

I normally wear it with a brown crocodile leather strap but with the weather warming up I’ve decided to throw on one of a few nato straps that I own. I know some watch or Rolex purists probably don’t love the idea of a nato strap on a dress watch but I love the clash it gives with a suit. I think it is a nice punch of color and fun and I get compliments all of the time.

So my point, whether it be throwing on a different watch strap or a different pair of shoe laces in your desert boots, it isn’t always bad to spice it up a bit and have some fun!

I’ve been traveling a bit recently and up until about a month didn’t have any good bags to throw the old gear in. I’ve been looking for some casual/weekend luggage that is rugged enough to take a beating. Luckily I remembered hearing about a company from Dappered not not long ago.

Frost River is a company that hand makes bags, canoe packs, bushcraft packs, etc. up in Minnesota. Not only are the bags amazing but they also come with a lifetime guarantee. Basically, these things are built like little tanks. All of the bags are built with waxed canvas, leather, and solid brass. The two bags pictured above are the ones that I got, the Flight Bag and the Vintage Pack. Not only will these bags certainly outlast me they are also very reasonably priced. I picked both of these bags up for $150 a piece.

Oh how I love my boots, first three pairs are Red Wings and then a pair of Wolverine 1000 Miles. They only get better with age, had to get them out to give them a nice coating of Venetian Shoe Cream.

When I got home from work today there was a nice package waiting for me on my front porch…my order from Oak Street Bootmakers. I eagerly opened the box and go straight to the good stuff, the shoes! I also ordered Venetian Shoe Cream which I highly recommend to clean, oil, and preserve your boots and shoes.

On to the shoes, these things definitely stand out. If Elvis is still alive living in Cuba these are the blue suede shoes he is rocking. The suede on these is great, no surprise coming from Horween. The Red brick camp sole is definitely a great color and stands out in a nice way. The rawhide laces add a nice touch of ruggedness. Overall this is a great, comfortable, and quality shoe. Now I just need the weather to get warmer for me to start wearing these. These are my first pair of Oak Street shoes and from my initial reaction they seem like great shoes.

Even though it is still February I am dreaming of spring and summer. Thanks to Mr. Simmons over at A Headlong Dive I’ve had my eye on Oak Street Bootmakers for a while now. It is a company that makes their shoes right here in the U.S. using Horween Chromexcel leather.

While I’m in love with my boots it gets pretty hot here in Ohio during the summer months and you need a nice go-to-shoe that is comfortable and easy to slip on. I will definitely be purchasing a pair soon from Oak Street and I have my hopes on the navy suede red brick sole trail oxford. The Horween suede, hand stitched moccasin construction, form fitting inner, and waxed threads. Definitely a well built shoe that is sure to look great with some chinos and a sport coat. The shoes are selling over at Oak Street Bootmakers website for $268

Yesterday I was out doing a little shopping and for whatever reason decided to stop into Eddie Bauer for the first time in probably 5 years…and I am glad I did! I had been looking for a more durable and built to last winter coat. I have had my current down coat for probably 6 or 7 years. Eddie Bauer was having a crazy sale and I was able to cop one of their top of the line parkas for crazy cheap. This Eddie Bauer WeatherEdge Superior Down Parka is insanely warm as I found out today. According to Eddie Bauer it is ideal for temperatures ranging from -20 F to 0 F. It has around 300 pockets, a detachable fur hood, and packed full of european goose down.
This thing is insane. I feel invincible. It was on sale at Eddie Bauer for 180 with another 50% off bringing it down to $90, which was a little too tough to pass up! I highly recommend it, even after just one days use.
